Actor Interview – Charlie Youel

Actor Interview – Charlie Youel

Charlie is joining us at GCT for the second time! We are so lucky to have him in the role of Harker. He brings this character to life with his natural talent for comedy. Though younger than Harker, you wouldn’t know it. He has a knack for the mature characters, and he does very well with it! Come see him in DRACULA: Comedy of Terrors!

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

The hardest part for me is the accent, everything else translates to onstage pretty well.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

I saw the premier of this show in New York last October, so when GCT announced that this show was a part of their 24-25 season, I jumped at the opportunity to be in it.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?

The cast size of this show can be as little as 5 people or stretched to 15, so each cast is unique in that the actors are almost always playing multiple roles.

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

This is definitely not the same book that you will remember reading in your high school english classes, there’s so much more added on in this play and it’s all hilarious.

What is your favorite line in the show?

All of Mina’s lines, she’s definitely the character with the best lines.

Who in the show is most like their character?

Probably me. Harker starts out as pretty scared of everything, and prefers to stick to what he’s used to, but over the show he gains his courage. I’m not quite as cowardly, but I’m definitely not jumping to volunteer for a vampire hunt!

Who is the least?

Sommer plays both Renfield and Dr. Westfeldt, and one is a mental patient who eats bugs, and the other is a raging misogynist. She is neither of those things in real life.

Is it easier to play this character or to be yourself on stage?

It’s always easier to be yourself onstage, because when you’re playing a character you have to put yourself in their shoes and gauge what their reaction would be, which is why actors really have to get to know the character they’re playing.

What do you love about your character?

Harker is very devoted to his wife (for most of the show), and despite his own flaws he always tries to do his best to be there for Lucy.

What do you hate about your character?

Harker’s own flaws affect Lucy and his relationship, and I want to reach through the script and tell him to grow up for the sake of his fiance!

If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?

Renfield looks like so much fun to play, you can do so much with his character.

Why should audiences be excited for this show?

It’s a new spin on a classic tale that makes it so much more fun to watch, you definitely don’t want to miss it!
