Emily plays Annelle for our productions of Steel Magnolias. She is an absolute ray of sunshine. She comes into every rehearsal with a beaming smile and is a joy to be around.
Emily’s Annelle is just perfect! Annelle is the character that goes through the biggest transition throughout the show. Emily portrays Annelle’s growth and changes so beautifully. Her performance is not to be missed!
Tell us a little about you!
I am a stage and film actor and writer from Richmond. I have two cats (Johnny and June) and two dogs (Dawson and Velma) that I love dearly. They get along better than you’d think they would! I also love to crochet, travel, and play video games.
What has been the most impact female relationship(s) in your life?
There are so many amazing women in my life. My Mama! My grandmothers. So many forever friends that I consider family. My mother in laws. My sister in laws. The incredible women that I work with. Friend’s moms. Former teachers. I’m so lucky to know all of you. I love you!
What do you love about your character?
I love that Annelle is the one character who doesn’t already know everyone else. Truvy, M’Lynn, Clairee, Shelby, and Ouiser have known each other for years. They have established relationships with each other that exist prior to the play’s start. But Annelle meets them and gets to know them during the course of the play. I really enjoy playing with that dynamic.
If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
I would love to play Ouiser! She is vibrant, hilarious, and speaks her mind. I would have a blast playing with her lines. And I, too, am very protective of my plants and my dog.
What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?
I think audiences will be thinking about how both funny and heartfelt Steel Magnolias is. I always think about my favorite lines after a show. There are some great ones in this play!
What is your favorite line?
My favorite line is one of Annelle’s – “he makes a mean cherry Coke!” It’s very much something that I would say, except replace cherry Coke with Shirley Temple.
Who should come see this show?
Everyone should come see this show!
If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?
Meagan Justice!
What do you do when you are not doing theatre?
When I’m not doing theatre, I’m probably working on a film project, spending time with my husband and our 2 cats and 2 dogs, or crocheting!
What is the last thing you do before you step out on stage?
Take a big, deep breath and remind myself that it’s a brand new show every night.
